My diet isn't the greatest, but any weight gain goes to the belly. I will be starting an exercise program soon, but I was just wondering about the relationship between belly fat and low thyroid.

Yes unfortunately, there is usually alot of weight gain after thyroid surgery, I gained almost 55 lbs in 1yr. Most of mine is in the belly area as well. Because thyroidectomys cause such hormonal changes especially in middle aged women (I'm 42) weight gain is eminent.

Hypothroidi is one cause of fat gaining, becouse thyroid hormones regulate the metabolism. Also hyperthroidi makes people thin. You must check your T3,T4,TSH hormone levels, and if they are lower than normal you must use thyroid hormone pills everyday.
