This is a pretty good question. I've been a fan of Green Day's since they were playing in the bay area (San Francisco), and their first two albums were amazing. After that, I still enjoyed the odd song or two from them, but I hated their slower stuff. Their new album, however had some pretty good tunes on it.
Fall Out Boy I was listening to when they were unknown and promoting on the internet. I heard their music at 15 megs of Fame, and liked it a lot. Then I heard them on a podcast or two. I think they have some kick-*** songs, and shouldn't be dismissed as just another lame pop-punk band.
In a tight race, I give the edge to Green Day because they have more good songs then Fall Out Boy. BUT, that's over many albums. So today it's Green Day, but over time that might change.

Fall Out Boy, Panic!, what's the difference? they all sound the same to me. They both have that irritating deep voiced singer. I guess having been a GReen Day fan for over 10 years... Green Day

Green day is good but fall out boy and green day are getting old try Panic! At The Disco they really rock!!

Green Day is way better!!!
Fall out boy don't even have their own style of music, they sound just like other new rock bands!

I'd say that they're both really original, and I really like them both. But Green Day's songs are more varied, in the sound. With F.O.B, I feel like I'm listening to the same song over and over again with different lyrics, sometimes. Green Day is also made of better musicians... but F.O.B knows they can get a point across without resorting to a lot of obscenity. It's a toss-up for me.
