I'm English and a Man Utd. supporter but first and foremost a lover of the beautiful game and I have always felt that he was overrated. Even when he played for United he only really did what he does now, which is not enough. The only reason it wasn't so noticeable as it is now is because he had the likes of Paul Scholes and the Neville Brothers, Cantona and Giggs etc. People didn't expect as much from him. Now he is in a team of great stars but they are all in the same vain. Flashes of brilliance here and there but a lack of work ethic.

No I do`nt agree with you, I am giving you my opinion and so far as I am concerned David Beckham is not over-rated at all and to say he was there just to sell shirts is insulting not only to David but the rest of the team. How can you say he should`nt have been picked for the team who would you have taken in his place, wallcott I suppose. Have you looked at his record of goals he has scored for England no well he has scored 19 goals for England not bad for someone who is overrated in your opinion.

Shouldn't be pick up for the team??? Didn't you see that every single goal scored by England during the world cup came either from an assist from him or scored by himself!!!

Furthermore, the only game England couldn't win was the one in which he was injured and had to be replaced! On that game, they simply couldn't find the goal...coincidence, I don't think so!

He deserved to be there, to be captain, and he was a leader...he carried England almost to semis!

Who do you think should have been captain? Lampard???, who now has a new record in the history of World Cups: Twenty something shoots on goal and no goals!!! Just amazing...

He may not be the BEST soccer/football player,
but he does have enough skills to be on the team.
And I like his sportsmanship on the field.
I do agree that, because of
his good looks and his celebrity wife,
he is a bit over-rated.
David has been the coveted captain since 2000.
Part of it does have to do with his popularity,
but I still think he deserved it to some degree.
Beckham is actually stepping down
from his position to give someone else a chance.
(See what I mean about sportsmanship?)
All in all, I like the guy.

Beckham has always been way overrated, if he looked good on the field it wasn't him it was his teammate's that made him look good. i tired of people saying how great he is, great is a really big word for a player like Beckham. if you want to call a player great look at Zidane he controls the game on the field, know that's a great player Beckham will never ever come close to Zidane game and magic.

I sort of agree with you. Beckham does have football skills, he's probably one of the best at free kicks out there. He bends it like very few players do -- hence the movie title "bend it like Beckham" ;-) At the World Cup, England could move forward thanks to one of his famous kicks, in the match against Ecuador. But probably he's starting to get "old" (by football standards) and therefore he doesn't get any better. Plus, free kicks aren't everything you need in football, and they are probably the easiest kicks. So, yes, Beckham is a good player, but a little hyped by the media. Being handsome (because he is) and married to Posh Spice adds to the hype.

YES! Beckham is a load of rubbish. Why can't Real get rid of him for someone like Pirlo? Or anyone else? He has no left foot, and the dribbling ability of a 5 year old. He has two talents, free kicks, and spending money on his (HOT!!!!) wife.

Anyone who gets the amount of publicity he gets is going to be overrated, no matter how you slice it. "Overrated" is perhaps the most overused term in all of sports.

That said, forget about the hype and look at what he does on the field...then evaluate him based on this:

Is he one of the best players in the game? If so, be happy.

If not, then yes by all means complain and call him "overrated."

That is the danger of professional sports. Once you get super rich of it, you don´t do your best anymore. Beckham starts to be over-rated.
