by the time i watch the local news, they just forecast for the present day and beyond. sometimes i'm curious what the official temp was for a previous day.

Weather.com also works. It will give you the past months highs and lows. It will give you averages for the month, like rainfall, temperature etc...
The thing is, you need to find out where they take the temperatures from. If you're in a large city, its probably not a big deal. However, if you're in a small town like me, they actually measure temps at the airport which is 15 miles away from town. Makes a big difference sometimes.

Check out the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) from NOAA.
(NCDC) is the world's largest active archive of weather data. To get access to all the data for free you must log on from any university campus that is registered w/ the NCDC or has a meteorology program.
