Theres http sites and ftp sites. http sites are the newsites liek these, and ftp (file transfer protocol) are basically sites for pure downloading. With an ftp program, you can download files very fast from ftp sites. However, using a regular browser, downloads for ftp sites would be extremely slow.

file transfer protocol (FTP) allows you to move files between computers. You can move files in ascii (character) mode or binary mode.
Often you can logon to a machine anonymously and use your email address as your password, or you can login using the userid and password that were provided to you.

The machine you are trying to ftp must be setup correctly. You can then get (grab) or put (place) files on the machine that you just connected to. You can also change directories and list files when allowed/appropriate.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a protocol for transfering files to your website host. Its a protocol like HTTP (Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol). You can use it form your browser writing ftp://youraddress.com.
You can already use an ftp program to upload your files to your host. They are usually more easy than your browser.

ftp isn't a program - it stands for File Transfer Protocol. it is a form of file sharing. if you click on an FTP link - if accesses is granted - you will be able to search through directories to files to find one that you want to download.

An ftp program is a program that allows you to connect to an ftp server to transfer files, folders, etc... FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol typically running on port 21, but can be configured to run on various ports. It is used a lot to upload webpages also.
