White collar crime is that committed by a person in the course of their occupation. There are three main types:
1) Occupational crime - that carried out at the expense of the company, such as theft and fraud.
2) Corporate crime - that carried out on behalf of an organisation, such as tax evasion and false advertising.
3) Professional crime - that carried out as a lifetime career, such as the Mafia.
According to Hughes and Langan (2001), white collar crime goes largely undetected because it has low visibility, and its complexity and diffusion of responsibility and victimisation makes individual prosecution difficult. Also, from the Marxist perspective (Pearce, 1979), corporate prosecutions would undermine the ideology that the working classes commit the majority of crimes.

As for its impact on society, Levi found that in the late 80s, 75% of bank fraud was committed by employees, and Pearce (1976) calculated that the detected levels of corporate crime were twice as much as the total value of all robberies in the US. Bear in mind that these were only the crimes which were detected, there may be many more in the 'dark-figure' of crime.

However, also remember that many theorists looking at white collar crime tend to be just a tad one-sided, ignoring the impact of other crimes on society.

That sounds like an essay question. White collar crime is illegality performed by office workers, or those in a socially respected position which they abuse. It's impact on society? This is a matter of opinion - one could argue that white collar crime is really the ideal of this capitalistic, power-hungry society.

i would give the points to purple leaf. its worth adding that the monetry value of white collar crime probably outweighs all the crime that is actually prosecuted. how many of us think nothing of beefing up our expenses claims every month but want the 'others' who might steal our dvd recorder prosecuted for 'our' protection?
