Most cars equiped with an axod transmission will shift into overdrive at about 45 to 48 miles per hour.If you are driveing at that speed in town and you can feel the trans shifting back and forth you should drop the trans. into "drive'.iF you are on the highway, towing,on a downhill or flat ground o.d. is ok.Pulling a grade you should always drop to drive or lower. It will not "damage"anything but your fuel milage to run in drtive at highway speeds.depending on make and model some do not give you the option of manualy shifting from drive to o.d.

You should only turn off the "overdrive" if you are towing something that will be a serious strain on the engine...most of us don't ever even have that experience. If you don't drive in overdrive all the time, you're going to ruin your transmission. Always keep it on!

You should not use overdrive when towing anything or going up and down a lot of hills if the transmission keeps shifting in and out of overdrive.

Use the overdrive at all times except when you are towing a heavy load. This will give you the best gas mileage.

i agree with the others. overdrive is a feature that slows down your acceleration when your car automatically shifts gears. it saves gas and the only downside is that your car doesn't accelerate quite as fast as when overdrive is off. i'd say leave it on all the time.

I always used overdrive on an automatic, especially if you are on the highway. You could cause serious engine damage if you drive for too long on the highway in "drive"

You should not use overdrive when going up a steep grade or for certain towing applications. If you are in one of these situations and you start to lack power, you should downshift.

Not when towing ANYTHING- I pop mine into o/d as I'm pulling up the merger ramp, and back off as I am pulling back into traffic. The newer cars are MUCH better about it not making much difference UNLESS YOU ARE TOWING ANYTHING.
