The word 'jest' has no adjective or adverb form. You may use the phrase 'in jest' which means 'jokingly'. Example - I only said it in jest - you're obviously not fat.

Julie B said, "The correct adjective use would be "Surely you jest," because in this case it's an action word - something someone is doing.

"The adverb use would be "The comment was said in jest." Even though it doesn't end in 'ly' like most adverbs, the term "in jest" is being used to modify the verb (said)."

She is wrong in both cases. Didn't we all learn parts of speech in third grade? In "Surely you jest," "jest" is indeed an action word meaning "to joke," so it is a verb.

In the second example, the phrase "in jest" is a prepositional phrase used as an adverb to modify the verb "said." The word "jest" itself is a noun here, the object of the preposition.

I can't think of an instance where the noun/verb "jest" could be used as an adverb or adjective.

The only way I can think of to use it as an adjective would be something along these lines: "He used a jesting tone."

Surely, you jest (verb)

Surely, this is a jest (noun)

Are maybe you are just more serious than I think and I have been unjust and can't justify this silly answer because a just response would have been. "Just proofread your question, please!"
