The more you get points, the more you get to higher levels, and the more you have privileges. I guess that it's also for limiting the questions--it costs 5 points to ask a question (until you get to the highest levels where it is unlimited).
And finally, it's a trick to make us visit this website more often. We always want more and more points--it's addictive.

Cyber beer. Once you reach a certain level, Yahoo will allow you to log in to a site where they have a picture of your favorite beverage and you have to lick the monitor. :)

If you get to Level 7, you get to become a yahoo answers nazi. If you get to Level 0, yahoo answers nazis will hunt you down and beat you mercilessly.
