A lot of language, much of which wasn't written, but almost all of which probably had at least some references to gods or other unobservable forces conceived in order to explain the inexplicable.

The concept of a single god seems not to have come along until about 5000 years ago, and even then took almost 4000 years to gain significant popularity.

So, I expect that the answer to your question is that before God there were a lot of other Gods.

Before people, though - and more importantly, before language, there was no such thing.

Before the christian God there were the Roman, Greek, Mayan, Native American, Hindu (which survives), Buddhist (which survives), Incan, Aztec, Pagan, Daoist (which survives), Druid, Egyptian and so on, and so on (most early religions were polytheistic or nature based, some did not actually worship "Gods" buts they worshipped unexplainable acts of nature)... so the idea of a "God" or gods is pretty played out isn't it?

Think about it: every culture throughout history has incorporated a "religion" of sorts to explain the unexplainable... Now, we have science, we have a way of explaining our world rationally without the existence of some all-knowing all-powerful entity...

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the religious and devout people of this world... I look up to them for standing up for what they believe in... but I cannot stand the self-righteous, everything-I-say-is-right mentality of the modern evangelist. Please, by all means believe what you want and will, but don't press upon others to believe what you believe... because then you take away choice, and according to most religions of the world, isn't choice and free will the basis of being human?

I have two answers for you

1. Imagine the big bang as an huge blast of colors in a canvas, now imagine that the big smudge is the configuration that the universe randomly acquired, with animals, earth, sun, you, me, and God, now you may wondering "but who put all those colors in the canvas?" the colors were set by themselves as a desire to be known by others (in this case the human) because if we do something we want it to be seen by others, it would be worthless if just we can see our own creation

2. Have you seen a dog chasing its own tail? well if we get too philosopherish we'll be like dogs chasing our own tail, we wont reach any conclusion and if we reach one conclusion this one will need another and so on

God's answer to Moses, when moses saw the burning bush (a bush that appeared to be on fire, but it wasn't actually burning) was.... I Am that I Am. Or I Am I Am. As someone else answered that name means He always was, always is, and always will be. He has no begging and He has no end. I answered someone else's quetion that this is why the planets are spherical. Becuase a sphere is the only shpe that has no end in all direction. The only exception is outwards; which is the direction we go when were tryna go out into space.

Your question definitely belongs in the religious section, not here. Good Science has never pretended to address god(s) within the context of their inquiry into the nature of the universe and all things in it.
