I understand you, because I am a surgeon and I perform also hernia surgeries.
What happens to you seems to be a normal feeling in a wound after every surgery. However, I will explain you why.
When is necessary to cut skin and go deeper, also very tiny nerve fibers are cut and the first postoperative time -if no complications happens as it seems in your case - is that the area of the surgery, cut and an area surrounding it produces numbness or sometimes a weird painful-bothersome feeling while touching the area. Sure, what is normal for the surgeon is not for the person that has the feeling and ignores the reason or what it will happen.
The mere truth is that the complete sensation lost never comes equally back. However, the recovery is more than enough as to carry on a normal life and forget about the surgery that’s what the surgeon told you is right, but too brief for what you were expecting.
Do not be worried, the remaining tiny reduced feeling occurs only in the incision and not in the originally postoperative area that is usually swollen.
Take it easy, get recovered and once you go back to your activities you will forget all your concerns,
Sincerely, Fro

Numbness around the surgical site is completely normal, when the skin was cut nerve endings were cut too, it takes time for those nerves to regenerate and grow back. As for the pain, you have to expect some post operative pain. As long as you don't have a fever, and the incision is clean, there is nothing to worry about. You need to trust your doctor a bit more and stop worrying so much.
