If you mean soccer, well, the world is divided, three ways.

Pele was great, and also (seemingly) a gentleman. His grace is legendary.
Maradona, I think, had a more pragmatic technique, and perhaps a "faster" touch. If less elegant than Pele he was at least as efficient when it came to scoring.
Ronaldinho, what a player. We will know in a few years.

From those I've seen, Maradona is the best.
I haven't seen Pelé, though. From what I read and see in videos he was probably above Maradona.
To the fellow who claims that polls in Brazil say Garrincha was better: You are wrong! I am brazilian and have never seen such a poll. There may be one specific with that result, but the vast majority says Pelé was the best. In fact, in the year 2000, the main Brazilian football magazine, Placar, picked the best players of XX century, listing from 1 to 100. This is what I remember;
1. Pelé
2. Maradona
3. Cruyff
4. Garrincha
5. Beckenbauer
6. Di Stefano
7. Euzébio
8. Puskas
9. Yashin
10. Romário

(There may be some mistakes in the positions 6 to 9, but it is something like that)

According to polls in Brazil, Pele isn't even the best Brazilian footballer ever - that honour belongs to Garrincha.
For me, the best player I've seen is Maradona - Argentina won the 86 world cup with a mediocre squad, 1 reasonable keeper and 1 genius in the #10 shirt.

John Charles scored 39 goals one season playing in defence. Never booked in his career. Won 3 Italian Championships with Juve. Always had time for the fans

There have been so many I think you would need to qualify your question by asking in a particular position. I was fortunate to see Moore, Beckenbauer, Eusebio. Law. Baxter, Banks,Puskas,DiStefano and the list goes on and on. All of these guys would have found themselves somewhere in a poll for the best in their position so it is not realistic to say any one player was the best ever.

Possibly George Best, utter genius who could do anything
he wanted with a ball. Strong, brave and gifted. Unfortunately due to his Irish Nationality he never got to play in a World Cup, what a tragedy.

In British football I would say Mark Hughes, for his consistency and drive... Paul Gascoinge had the magic touch but booze and injury knocked the pedestal!

Zinedine Zidane, Pele n Maradona have plyed in times when defenders weren't so good , keepers were average, however in the modern day it's tough. Zidane has won everything that he could.
