$1200 US Dollars just for the flight from the Boston, Massachusetts to Melbourne, Australia. It all depends on where you are from, where in Australia you are going, how long you plan on staying there, and what you plan on doing there.
Staying in hostels is cheaper than staying in hotels, the day you plan to fly also changes the cost of flying, weekends are more expensive than midweek flights.
When you are booking your flight, find a web special and then contact your local travel agency. Tell them the deal that you have found on-line and ask if they can beat it. Chances are that they will try their best to get your business and do what they can to beat the on-line deal.

depends on where you are leavign from...We priced it and the airfare alone was about 3,000 a person out of philadelphia

From the U.S. if you go during their winter, which is now, it is about $1600. If you go during their summer, it can be $2400 or more.
