If your talking from the earth, the brightest star is obviously the sun (main sequence). The second brightest star is Sirius, also a main sequence. The brightest if they were all an equal distance from you would be a Nova.

The north star (Polaris) is the 46th brightest star in the sky (not counting the Sun).
