my friends computer came with mcafee security suite. I'd like to uninstall the Virus Scan ONLY since the subscription ran out, and Install AVG Free. Do you think this is a good move? Thanks...

Do not uninstall ... just turn it off. Try AVG free ... it is the best out there. Uninstall can cause problems.

McAfee have the largest market share in the virus scanner business and have been developing anti-virus protection software for ages. It is a very good scanner. but obviously it is as good as the upgrades available for it. If yours has expired you need to either pay a new subscription with McAfee or else uninstall it and install one of the free offerings. You mentioned AVG. I would personally go with Avast Home which is also free (available at www.avast.com). IMHO for all-round protection it is a much better product. One thing to remember though is not to install more than one anti-virus scanner. Choose one and make sure you uninstall any others. Enjoy

Since the subscription has run out, it's practically useless so yes unistall it. - But.....before you do, go to Limewire.com and download Norton Anti Virus - follow the directions in the .txt file to install it and get it registered. This will protect your PC and you'll have another 12 months fully protected with Nortons.

If you're not inclined to do this, then you can format your hard drive and reinstall McAfee and you'll still have 12 months of protection.

Go ahead with your glory ride, sure do uninstall mcafee, its a memory hog & slows down the pc speed. I used it for 2 years, it suxs.

AVG anti-virus free edition is far better than mcafee.
You should completely uninstall mcafee security suite or else there can be software conflicts, its not adivisable to keep firewalls, anti-spyware of mcafee, when you can can find much better anti-spy/adware & firewall for free.

The following are the best FREE anti-spyware, anti-adware & firewalls. Download them & feel fully protected (these programs are much better than mcafee as they are specifically concentrating on one program).

For anti-spy: Spybot:search&destroy
http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10122137.html

For anti-adware: Ad-Aware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Firewall: Kerio
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm

(Kerios is much easier to configure, zone alarm is okay but people faced some problem in its latest edition configurations, an experience pc user can only do it. Zone alarm pro is much better but you need to buy it. Kerio is trial edition, but even after expiry period they don't rip essential protections for the user, just disable minor functions. The Protection remains same as in paid program).

Good luck !

YES! this is an excellent idea. Not only is AVG good, but Mcafee is a pain. Good move all the way.

the biggest situation right here is that Mcafee does not desire to bypass away that easy. It likes you to purchase it and it will make existence as you be responsive to it, all extra effectual! you are able to desire to get each little bit of that software out of your registry with some thing like "CC cleanser" or "loose Window Registry restore" in the previous you install the different virus scanner or firewall or maleware software As to avast being from now on effectual or worse then yet another loose one, this is the person this is at fault for viruses! in case you bypass to lime-cord, Torrent, Pirate and cracking web pages and play around you would be contaminated despite in case you're working a $1800.00 firebox and a $2000.00 virus-container with the aid of fact you allowed it into your gadget.

McAfee is an excellent scanner (when used properly) but if cost is an issue, go with AVG. Just make sure that you use something.
