Or does it just make the acoustic sound louder? Also, if it does sound the same as an electric, would the acoustic sound get in the way of the electric sound if the amp is not on a loud enough setting?

no... it sounds like an acoustic guitar that is louder. Kinda....
Most acoustic/electric guitars use piezo pickups. They don't truly reproduce the sound of an acoustic. But... it will still sound like an acoustic guitar.

For the most part it'll sound like an acoustic but louder unless you get a pedal that changes the sound like with an electric guitar. And the sound will be the same with each different volume setting.

If you have an amp that is set on the "clean" mode, then it just makes the sound the guitar normally makes louder. You can distort it though, and make it sound like and electric. I used to play live gigs this way. Can't tell the difference if you have an acoustic/electric distorted. Sounds like a rock guitar.

No it doesn't sound exactly the same ...now if you had an effects pedal it can sound any way you want it to. I actually prefer
acoustic electric guitars.

It sounds the same when you plug it in. Only when you start to play it does it sound different.
