Chennai is all set to get the country's first Government-funded modern biodiversity institute with the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) finalising plans to set up an integrated facility next year.
The NBA has allotted Rs. 22 crores for setting up the facility, which will include a biodiversity documentation centre, library, in situ plant, genetic resources conservation centre and a microbial culture collection and maintenance centre, besides an auditorium and exhibition hall.
The NBA, headquartered in Chennai, was set up in 2003 by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to implement the Biodiversity Act, 2002.
It was also mooting the setting up of four regional centres for effective monitoring and implementation of the Biodiversity Act, NBA member-secretary K. Venkataraman said in a press release here on Monday.
The NBA was in the process of forming State Biodiversity Boards by providing financial assistance. So far Rs. 45 lakhs had gone into the formation of SBBs in Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and West Bengal. Tamil Nadu is one of the States yet to constitute a SBB.
