Neither really has an advantage. The fact that both are used is testament to it.
AC's usefulness is due to the fact that it used to transmit power, because an AC generator (and an AC motor) is more economical to produce, and AC is easily increased or decreased with a transformer.
DC is useful in electronic circuits (which is in most modern appliances), and is the only kind of current that can be delivered by a neat little package of stored energy (batteries, solar cells, and fuel cells)
As for shocks, both AC and DC can shock you pretty bad. AC is more dangerous though. DC shock leaves your muscles cramped, AC shock makes your muscles twitch very fast. Cramping is much easier to correct.

Sorry -" AC is more advantageous since it prevents people from getting electric shocks. in case of direct current one cannot be protected. "
That is false - I have been shocked more times by AC than I care to recall. DC will floor current into your body without alternating so it is more painful. Both will shock you.
AC and DC have different applications each is good for certain things otherwise we would only use one type.

the first answer is the best.
I worked for a company that produced back up power systems for the phone company.
We used DC to run the phonne office, and AC to send the current over the lines. Electrical current can be switched from AC to DC and vice versa with inverters so where one is better than the other it can be switched..

I just thought of this example.
AC is better if you want an electric motor to run at a certain speed. The motor will run at the same frequency as the current. A motor running with DC however is a lot easier to change the speed for. You just lower the voltage.

Depends on the application. AC is economic when power has to be produced and transported in a large quantity.

For electronics and such, DC is better. For transmission of power over long distances, AC is better.
