They are not purses, they are called "Man Bags". More and more men are carrying these, especially commuters, as there is more stuff we they need to carry these days (cell phones, Pods, DVDs and game rentals to return to the store, sports drink, granola bars, etc.) and they are more practical and accessible than the backpacks, which can also strain your back, and more usable than a briefcase with a handle which is a nightmare if you commute.
I have to agree that it is strange sight and it looks out of place when you first see a fellow carrying one, but that is because it is what we have been conditioned to.
The only ones that don't scream out "effeminate" are the ones that look more like a cross between briefcase and bag, usually in leather or leather-like fabric either with clean, clear-cut shapes, or ones that look like old-western mail pouches.

I carry a purse so I will have some place to keep my makeup, brush and extra pair of pantyhose. Plus if I wear a pink dress, I like carrying a pink press. I believe I have a purse to match every color of skirt or dress that I have. Anyhow these days a lot of transvestites are coming out of the closet, myself included.
