Definite possibility of a virus. If your PC is running really slow, go to Start, Run and type in msconfig. This will bring up your start menu options. Deselect everything in the Service and Startup tabs except for Microsoft products and the ones you need to connect to the web. You'll have to reboot - this stops any viruses from loading.
If your anti virus software is not up to scratch then you should go to Limewire.com and download Norton Anti Virus - follow the directions in the .txt file to install it and get it registered. I'd also download Window Washer. This is a great program for getting rid of all the rubbish in your system - you'll be amazed at all the temporary files that are stored in Windows.
Disconnect your PC from the web while you're installing Norton's and leave it off until you've restarted your PC 3 or 4 times. After this you can reconnect to the web and run Live Update to get the latest anti virus software.
After this, run msconfig again and select "Normal Startup" - reboot - Norton's will find the remaining viruses and destroy them.
Windows updates are a problem - they're intended to protect computers that do not have Service Pack 2 - however, if you do load them, they can cause immeasurable problems. If you're able to, uninstall them. All you need for complete protection is Nortons Anti Virus.
Run defrag.exe about once a month. This puts files back in their correct position and helps your PC run faster. I'd also look at increasing the RAM.

Push the following ctrl+alt+del at the same time (but only once!) and look to see how many programs are running in your task manager at the same time.
You should be looking to see what normal start-up programs you have running in the "Processes" tab. If you have a number of things running in the background, this will considerably slow your laptop down. You can shut down many of those things from automatically starting up when you reboot your computer by editing the programs in your startup. For example, click on run, type in MSCONFIG and hit enter. Then click on the start-up tab and uncheck the items that you don't want to automatically start. Be careful not to shut down System processes or your laptop may not start!!
If that isn't the issue or if you want to rule out a virus/trojan/worm etc first:
You can do a free virus scan online here:

My laptop has gotten very slow like that too. My husband is a computer technician and is just going to build me a new computer but he says that it's the memory. That I need more memory because I have so much, like photos and the computer can't handle too much at one time.
