People in general are often divided into two ways of thinking - they either think predominantly with emotion, or with logic. Those who think emotionally often have trouble understanding how to use their computer (although that is becoming less prevalent as user-friendly becomes reality) and they have trouble with strategy games like chess. The concept of cause and effect is murky in their minds and many often never grasp the idea completely. This makes chess a dreaded challenge and way too much effort to be fun. Hating it is the next step in line.

The reason I dislike chess is that you can't just sit down and play it with anybody, since both players have to be at the same skill level for the game to be any fun. A chess master will finish off a novice very quickly, making it fun for neither player. The chess master didn't get a challenge, and the novice never had a chance. I prefer games where everyone has a chance to win, regardless of skill level.

I dislike chess because people who are really good at it hold it, and their abilities, in such high regard.
It is a fairly basic game that rewards those who spend the most time playing it and studying it, while at the same time punishes those who want to enjoy a friendly game to pass the time.
The biggest problem with chess? Chess snobs.

Just for comparison sake I am fairly decent at chess, I am not a sore loser, and most of my dislike occurs when I am winning a game and the person I am playing against starts getting way to competitive.

I guess it's because for some people it's boring and when they hear the word chess they think about old men in a park playing it. While others can hate it because they don't understand it and don't want to take the time to learn to play it. I think it's a very interesting game with a lot of learning behind it.
