Christina..
whatever virus application you have, I suggest you replace it with AVG Free. It works best IMHO. Then install arovax and run through the automatic scans/repairs it does when it loads up.
I am to assume you have spyware, and this should take care of it.
http://free.grisoft.com - antivirus
http://www.arovax.com - spyware
also, wouldn't hurt to install microsoft antispy
microsoft.com
im me in AIM (zeropointe01) if you need a step by step for this. I'm a bored network admin at work with nothing to do, and would have no problem walking you through this. :)

Go to
www.download.com
download and install SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
It is freeware, works with all windows operating systems.
Runs in the background from your start programs menu.
You do not even know it is running. It 'blocks' spyware before
it has a chance to enter your system.
All other answers you have received is good advice but adding Spyware Blaster is very good insurance against future problems.
Your problem is spyware. Until you remove it, you will have problems.
>> If you use Windows ME or XP, the software has a feature, i.e. System Restore. Go into your Control Panel, System and disable this feature. Shut down the computer. Restart computer then run your anti-virus and spyware software. After all is complete, shut down computer. Wait a couple of minutes. Restart. Go back to your System settings and re-enable System Restore. This will establish a 'new and clean restore point.
Usually, virus and spyware will take up and reside in System Restore files. Disable the feature erases all previous restore points thus eliminating anything that should not be there.
Go to your internet tools and delete all cookies and all files including 'off-line' files. This will empty the cache files. Next click on Start / Search / Files and Folders (type in) *.tmp. Click edit and select all if any are found. Click on file then delete. Click on YES when prompted. *.tmp files are temporary files and are not needed.

You are correct that what you have is adware. Good job in not being an idiot that would click on random things, you're a head of the game already. Now for fixing it:
http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=adware%20removal&tag=srch
I would suggest Spyware doctor. Install, run, wait, delete.
If you can't get the link, www.downloads.com, seach for "adware removal"

Download Spybot and AdAware.
You can get both from download.com
Install and check for updates, then run each program.
Those two programs combined will get rid of most spyware and adware.
Your problem is not a virus, it is spyware.

First thing first...
Do you have anti spy ware program(s) and anti virus program(s) [don't actually post the answer]
if you do run them.
if you don't see links at the bottom.
download each of them, and then run them.
I suggest doing the AVG first...
Hope this works for you

you got an ugly adware. install spybot search & destroy, this program can remove it from your PC.
that's the official homepage of Spybot
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
you haven't to download program updates. once installed the program can do it itself, just click the button "search for updates" then check all the boxes and click on install.
