can it cause imbalance in ions leading to the runs - or is it a myth?

No it's not safe to drink distrilled water. Water is the universal solvent and generally carries many dissolved cations and anions in solution. When water is distilled those dissolved anions and cations are removed. When a person or animal drinks distilled water it immediately draws cations and anions such as sodium, calcium, potassium, phoshates, chlorides etc... from the surrounding tissue. One may not notice any ill effects from drinking a glass of distilled water unless their electrolytes are already depleted inwhich case they could bring on heat stroke or prostation or heart failure almost instantly. prolonged consumption of distilled water will cause electrolyte imbalances to occur that can lead to heart failure and death. You may have noticed a product at the grocery store called "distilled drinking water". This product has had calcium, magnesium, sodium and other electrolytes added back to the water after distillation.

Can you drink it yes if it has been heat distilled there is probably no problem however if chemically treated its probably best not to. I wouldn't recommend you use distilled from the shop! You are less likely to get the runs with distilled water than you are from water out of the tap! The runs are usually caused by water born pathogens (bugs) and as such distillation kills them Some of the little blighters though are really tough and the only thing that will really make sure they are gone is UV light. Heat distillation does however tend to remove the mineral content which is where the ions are from in water. If you have a balanced diet you are not likely to experience any significant problems but that said if you are thinking of trying it consult a doctor and get your ion levels monitored. Distillation of water is often the only way to be sure of your water when in a survival situation and many people are alive today because of it.

Yea seriously...don't drink distilled because it is lacking ions that are essential....

It also tastes funny because there are no ions. Read the side of a bottled watter container sometime. They add salts to make it taste right.

And I'm fairly sure no community feeds there people distilled water. It would be way to expensive and serves no purpose. Distilled is not "more pure" its simply missing ions. It's great for doing chemistry with but bad for drinking.

Take a few drinks if you want...it won't kill you...but it's not healthy.

No, imbalance of ions due to drinking of distilled water is not a myth, its a fact. Distiled water has no minerals and is not suitable for drinking, it is only used in labs and other surgical work. I advice u not to drink it. Some people r confusing it with pakaged water. But i guess u r talking about distilled water. Packaged water is not distilled water. Distilled water is a specially made water used in labs.

It's okay. The amount of ions in any normally palatable water is pretty small, anyways. You are much more likely to get useful ions from your food than from a glass of water. Distilled water doesn't just 'tend' to not have any ions - it is evaporated from crude water and therefore has no dissolved material in it; - and so it is great for keeping your dishes clean and not stopping up your shower head with concretions of (mostly) calcium.

That's a complete myth. Nothing wrong with drinking distilled water.
Don't listen to the quacks who are trying to tell you so.

distilled water- no minerals, no germs,no style, purely H2O. ingesting water- basically possibility-free adequate to drink. spring water- a lot of minerals and tastes sturdy.yet not effective no matter if it includes any risky germs or not.

It is just water that has been treated by boiling and condensation to remove solids, inorganics, and some organic chemicals. It is a myth, it is better for you than tap water.

Of course it's ok to drink it! And having less ions DOES by definition make it purer water.

Absolutely right - quacks will tell you anything that is processed / treated etc is bad for you.

Myth, it's just water with no impurities.
