Britain did not try to colonize Australia until its American colonies achieved independence, so maybe it is an issue of time and distance? Or perhaps it is that the mass of immigrants in the US homogenized the accent into a very distinct American one. Whereas Australia historically has limited immigration thus less 'foreign' accents to dilute it's native tongue?

was the U.S really a colony of Great Britain? i'm not sure, but i know Australia was, cuz the first settlers to establish a toehold in Australia were English settlers. and therez also another reason why the Australian accent might sound similar, that's cuz excluding the Aborigines, all the people living back then in Australia were English prisoners. the English govt. sent them to Australia from their overcrowded gaols so that they could start a new life in a new continent. so everyone living in Australia now are actually descendants of those Britishers or are Aborogines.

Australia was a prison camp for the UK. Almost all that were sent ther were from the UK. The US is made up of many different peoples from many different countries. Accent in Australia remained somewhat intact. Accent in US evolved from the different languages that were introduced here.

Australia was where Great Britain sent their prisoners and the US is not just made up of people from Great Britain. For example, I am of German descent. America is a melting pot of many different cultures whereas Australia is mostly of British descent and some Southeastern Asian descent.

Australian did not get the mix of nationalities as America did. Australia had mostly cockney and lower class prisoners at first.

Because America was founded much earlier than Australia and America had a greater variety of different nationalities living there than Australia did.

Good question. Maybe because America was more of a mix of immigrants and Australia was originally a Brittish penal colony. That's the only explaination I can think of.

Because the American accent evolved from so many other languages from those that emigrated from other countries.

America wasn't a British colony. It was it's own colony.
