you shouldn't start babies on solids until they are at least 6 months old as recent studies have revealed that babies weaned too early develop food allergies and its best to use home cooked food rather then jars and powdered food and never add salt hope this helps

Most health care organisations, including UNICEF and the World Health Organisation, say that solid foods should not be introduced before 6 months. This is because allergies are more likely to develop if a baby is fed solids too early - also, babies may experience digestive problems because their digestive systems are too immature to cope any earlier. Some people say that if a baby starts waking at night, then you should introduce solids and he will sleep through - this isn't always the case, though. If early solid feeding causes your baby digestive discomfort, then he will wake up more often!
You can start with cereal, but you don't have to - simple pureed vegetables are a good alternative, as many parents find that rice cereal constipates their babies. Mashed sweet potato or avocados are ideal first foods.
Take a look at http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/babys-first-foods.html , where you will find more advice on how to get started, plus lots of ideas on which foods to give your baby.
Good luck.

It is recommended by the American Academic of Pediatrics to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months and then introduce solid foods. I would not give solid food of any kind (including cereal, fruit, etc.) to any baby (breast or formula fed) prior to 6 months. Before that age, their intestines are not fully developed and increases their risk of health problems, allergies and obesity.
Some babies will be ready to eat later than 6 months. I started offering food to my baby at 7 months, but she really wasn't ready to eat until about 10 months. During that time, breastmilk remained sufficient for her.

Babies can start on rice cereal when they loose the tongue/thrust reflex, which is around 4 months. This is a reflex that pushes anything that is not liquid out of their mouth. It's recommended not to start anything else until they are 6 months+. When your baby does start eating other solids make sure the food is age/month appropriate. www.babycenter.com has a great list of what to start and when.

Between the age of 4 to 6 months. The baby should be able to hold their head up. Do not put cereal in a bottle as this can lead to obesity later in life.
I started my daughter on rice cereal at 5 months, they veggies and fruit at 6 months. Will introduce proteins in the 9th month.

I can't help but notice all those middle class mums down at the toddler group who have skinny, undernourished looking toddlers. They are shy, withdrawn and unadventurous, and I would say they "fed by the modern book" - ie Demand feeding and only milk.
In contrast, my 20 month old grandaughter appears more forward, curious, cuddly, and "alive" than her young peers. She wanted to eat real food when she was 2 months old because she grew TEETH, and has never looked back. She is strong as a horse, and never ails anything.
One of my own daughters grew her first tooth at 3 weeks old, so I started feeding her Farex off a spoon. No problem at all.
I recently spoke to some mums who on having their second and subsequent babies have followed their own instinct on weaning and feeding their babies. They agree, babies who are fed well, properly, and in a routine way are healthier, happier and more content.

you can start the baby cereal when they are about 3 months old, but I've had doctors tell me that the longer you hold off on other foods, the less likely they will have food allergies. I started my girls on jarred baby food when they were about 6 months old. I must admit I snuck in jars of baby fruit between 3 and 6 months though.

Between 4-6 months, depending on your babies ability to keep the food in their mouth; some babies just push the food out with their tongues.

Its meant to be solid food at 6 months, but juices can start at 3-4 months.Though if their really hungry before (8 ounces or more of milk) then you buy thicker milk for hungrier babies.
Babies can digest their food properly until at least 6 months.

Baby food anywhere from 4 - 6 months. A good rule is to start them on a little rice cereal first. Then green vegetables, because if you start them on fruit or yellow vegetables they will want those because they are sweeter than the green.
