The Crown Victoria has a police package available that has upgraded suspension, tires, and engine components. It is made for heavy duty use, and is rear wheel drive. Many departments buy them because of those features!!

Rear wheel drive cars hold up better than front wheel drive in the heavy pounding that they take plus there is room for all of their equipment, passengers (those arrested). The Crown Vic police package also has heavy duty alt. radiator, transmission cooler and a bigger engine. Ford has now fixed the problem with gas tanks blowing up upon rear impact....that was key :)

they do no longer look to be in all probability a Crown Vic, they're extraordinarily designed via Ford for police use. they have extra horespower, a extra physically powerful precise end velocity, twin batteries (to look after long sessions of idling with the AC or heater and the gentle bars working), larger tires, larger brakes, and so on. they're extra physically powerful and final longer - cop artwork is extremely annoying on a motor vehicle. Ford has a extreme ingredient of the police motor vehicle industry area of interest because of the fact they provide this actual layout.

the police officers don't purchase them, the local, state, of fed purchase them, traditionally the law enforcement agencies liked to stay with rear wheel drive vehicles (were originally more duarable for the hard use they get) that were fairly large in size (also used the chevy caprice before it was discontinued) although many are now also using front wheel drive vehicles (chevy impala). the agencies purchase vehicles that best fit thier needs and are lower priced, the car maufacturers will generally put together a package that has the options that they need and even upfit the vehicles for easy hook ups for all the electronics required

Most police officers I know don't drive Crown Victoria's. I guess since they drive them all day long for their job they don't feel like driving them when they are off too.

bobsled pretty much nailed it on the head, give him the ten points...the Crown Vic is popular with police departments because it is a full-sized (lots of room for both cops and perps), rear-wheel-drive (generally handles better than front-wheel-drive), V8-powered (shouldn't have to explain why that's a plus), sedan that is cheap to operate and maintain.

the officers don't purchase them
the local government buys them
they usually get a fleet purchase discount from Ford
and they seem to be reliable for them

The get a discount, and Ford soups them up for them, I think.
