first of all, they are not playing at the same positions...... and Rooney just looks ordinary to me. I mean he is good, but good only. i don't think he'll progress in terms of football with that aggressive racist behaviour, and i think, sadly, that it's this behaviour that makes him popular(his comments on Eng- Por WC match and attitude towards C. Ronaldo is a very nice exapmle, what a pro!!). Messi on the other hand is being cultivated and matured in one of the world's best teams side by side with best players in the world(I don't mean Ronaldinho!). Messi has better chance than Rooney after all. Popularity cant make some 1 play better or cure faster, as shown in WCFs, silly Erikkson to play him out of influence, and that tall guy also. Wasn't Defoe good enough?.... I'm no supporter of any PL team, and it helps me judge objectively.

Messi

I only saw Rooney in the world cup. If he is the player they say he is , he didn't show it. Not even ONE PLAY that let me see a good player in him. Not even ONE. Messi, on the other hand, burdened with the wrong decisions of a moronic coach, showed enough to see what a great player he is, mature well beyond his years. If he keeps improving, he'll be one of the great ones. But he is an Argentinian, and his country had many, many young players who showed such a great potential and became only average. Just one example, Ortega. They are at least 30 like him. We'll see what happens with Tevez.

Come on , Messi or Rooney!?!?!?!? Rooney is overrated and spoiled kid , he is not a team player (neither is C.Ronaldo) and that is why Man Utd sucks!!! Messi have great passes plus he is a great scorer and he is a TEAM PLAYER and that is what takes to be a great player!!!!!!

Rooney. And did everybody forget that he barely made it to the World Cup. He shouldn't have gone. Way too early for those demands after a foot fracture.
