Depends on how deep the water is when you get pushed in. About 1 second.
But really, with a good swimmer teaching you maybe at the most - 3 sessions. You will at least be able to keep your head up, dog paddle or even just swim normally. After the first session wouldn't be surprising though, with the right teacher.

It really depends on determination. On an average, it could take from weeks, to months. Fear of water, discomfort, and time availability all play a factor. If you really want to learn how to swim, then with plenty of practice and feedback, you could be jumpin' in a pool in about 3-5 weeks. It's really easy. Know the motion, keep your cool, and start from the shallow end towards the deep end. When you reached a depth up to your chest (or a little below), get on your stomach and start the motion. But remember to keep at a depth so that when you can't do it anymore, you can always get on your feet. Have someone with you at all times (who can really swim). If you go on under, relax...do not fight up or else you will either KO or push away your lifeguard. Let him/her bring you up, it'll be much faster than you fighting for life and not letting the lifeguard get close to you. I'm one of them.

faster than a kid if you really put you mind to it. kids just play and splash around that's why they don't learn to swim that fast.
the first one or two lesson the instructor will usually ask you to kick while holding a float to keep you head up. then he'll teach you to swim w/o the float... which is pretty easy if you are learning breaststroke. so 3 lessons if that's what you're asking.
