In the future we will depend on Solar-cell electricity, and solar generated hydrogen fuel. Other needed materials will be brought back to Earth by robot controlled mining freighters which have been to places like Titan and the asteroids. Initial propulsion will be via electric rail-gun with G forces beyond human endurance.
Drought, floods, pandemics and changing weather patterns, along with accidents in genetic research, mutating virus and bacteria, and ABC warfare might reduce the planet's population significantly.
