cut it at about 3-31/2 in. after the party take a metal leaf rake and use it to raise up the blades of grass, then give the grass a good watering. Two things happen with a lot of traffic
1. The grass gets matted down.
2. The water gets pressed out of the blades.

Addendum: Don't water before the party it will soften the ground and you will have one hell of mess on your hands.

I agree with some parts of the advice given to you: don't water before, at least 3 days before that party. It will create a muddy mess. If your grass is in good shape before the party, a little traffic won't hurt , unless you're having hundreds and hundreds of people coming over... after the party, if there is any damage, it won't be that bad. Just sweep it with a rake, mow and water. You don't need to apply a fertilizer, until the end of the summer. After a week, the party will be just a distant memory to your grass.

Grass is super hardy, its roots go really far down into the soil so it would take a lot of pressure to damage it. I really don't think you could get that just from your regular party. Ummm I guess either you should go talk to someone from your nursery, because depending on the type of grass you have, the advice you need could differ slightly, or just cut it to whatever you reckon looks good!

Leave it long... water it well, the day before, and then the day after , unless it really rains .. the water will " plump " up the blades of grass, making them more resiliant to walking on it , and then the next day, watering will help plump it up again, stiffening damaged blades of grass... Have Fun !

I'd cut it down well in advance of the party--a good three days. Also, water it thoroughly well enough in advance, so there won't be mud and women's heels won't sink into it. You also might consider watering it the morning after with something enriching and nourishing; preferably a liquid plant food.
