Many adults dont agree, but as young children most of us had imaginary friends!
It is very common and normal among children to make up imaginary friends and be engrossed in such thoughts.
Children find comfort in making up imaginary friends or mates. Many of these are popular story book characters or movie characters.
They mould the character and personality of their imaginary friend to suit their own needs which arent fulfilled otherwise.
This has nothing to do with insanity or past spirits.
Its jus a normal psychological response to feeling lonely or inadequate. You dont need to worry about it if its a child who has an imaginary friend.
However, being an adult with imaginary friends might not leave you with enough time and concentration on other activities, and i dont know how normal it is.

Many people have answered this question on a general sense. I will tell you my story. I had an imaginary friend when I was 5 years old. I made her up when certain things in my life were happening at the time. I was an only daughter with 2 brothers, they had each other and I had nobody and still don't, but that doesn't matter anyway cause I am nearly 30 and I don't need anyone. Anyway, my imaginary friend called Brenda, also came about because I grew up wanting a sister. My mom told me once that, if she had given birth to another daughter, her name would have been Brenda. So I took that and made Brenda real in my head. I let Brenda go when I was about 9 but once again she came back when I was about 11. I wanted her there cause, I felt that if I had her there, I wasn't alone. At 11 years old I was new to this country and I felt so alone. I needed her to come back. She was my comfort even though she wasn't real. When I started the 7th grade, I met a girl I have been friends with since then, and Brenda vanished for good, I didn't need her anymore. I believe imaginary friends are just friends we make up in our heads for whatever reasons. I do not believe they are past spirits, that is different. I have seen spirits that have given me their names. I didn't make them up. So there is a difference. I hope I have answered your question. Take care!

When I was really little (5 or 6) I had an imaginary friend. He never had a name and I said he was only the size of a germ and that's why no body could see him.
When I was about 8 I got a beanie baby platypus. I named her Platy and carried her with me everywhere. It was a physical toy but the personality I invented for it was pretty much my imaginary friend. I stopped carrying the platypus everywhere when I was about 10 but I still played with it til I was 12 when I just completly forgot about it.
I think adults have their own versions of imaginary friends, we're just a lot more mature about it. I've got a few characters that I've never really written stories about but I've got their looks, personality, history, everything all thought up. I've also got some Roleplaying characters.
As for Imaginary friends being spirits, that's complete nonsense

Well I used to pretend I was a super hero and had side kicks, but I couldn't see any of them. So if you were actually seeing your imaginary friends, then I'd have to wonder......
