When Gordie is narrating near the end, he says

"Friends come in and out of your life like busboys in a restaurant"

What does this mean? What does he mean by busboys? I know what it means kinda, like they come in and out of your life but leave. I just want to know what you people think. What is a busboy?

Thanks very much
Great movie btw!!!

they are basically inconsequential and they come and go... you never get to really know them and you soon forget about them.

Stand by Me is a great movie. Stephen King wrote the short story it is base upon.
I agree with others about the meaning of busboy.... but I also think they aren't inconsequential. If they weren't there, cleaning up the mess restaurants would get messy and not run smoothly; you can view that as a metaphor for your life, too. Without your friends (busboys) your life (restaurant) wouldn't be as good.

Busboys are the people who clean up the dishes and prepare the table for the next customer. The comment might mean that friends come and go and help you along the way.

In America a busboy is a dude who just clears the plates in a restaurant, its a lowly job that people usually do on the way to something better, like acting or whatever.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

busboys are the guys that clean up the tables at restaurants and set them up for the next customers. They get hired and fired (or quit) often (i.e. they don't last long)

Busboys clear off the tables. They come in and clear off a table and go on to the next table to clear, take the dirty dishes to the back room to the dishwasher, and come out for more dirty dishes.

i am a busgirl (lol) you know the people that come to the tables at resturants and clean them off after people leave and bring the dishes to the back? thats what we do. we go in and out of peoples lives fast. (i.e. walk to the table ask if they are done with the plate [i work at a buffet so they have tons of dishes to take back] take the empty plates and walk away.) in and out.

in responce to someones answer of "They are low-level employees who change jobs a lot." I sir or ma'am am NOT a low level employee. i get paid 8 dollars and hour to clean up other peoples messes. so :-P
