Yes. Twice. I worked in the oil industry; gave up, did a degree in environmental science. Luckily I was single at the time and could afford the financial hardship. Eventually I got a job for half my earlier salary. The job was rubbish (quite literally), boss was an abusive alcoholic. I returned to the oil industry a year later and have lived happily ever after.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side. All I would advise is that you put a lot of thought into what you want to do and how you go about it. I was naive and ill advised. However, if you make the right choice and plan it financially, you won't look back.

Yes. From hospital porter with 3 GCSEs to lecturer with more academic qualifications than I care to think about. It may be difficult but do consider going to an adult education college. The nearest to you, I think, is Northern College, nr Halifax. You might be eligible for a bursary which includes help with mortgages and dependants. I'm not saying it's easy but it is fulfilling. Get in touch with them and see what courses/training they offer. Good luck.

Yes, I did 4 times in 10 years. I feel excellent, but this depends on your personality. If you are a gambler (in a good way), somebody who enjoys change, who loves change, it would be great !
