you pay your bill at the restauraun and you get the receipt you then write the tip. but they gave me my card back so how do they charge the tip

Good Question.
Once they have swiped the card, they can charge to it again.
Not sure if there is a time limit or something but thats what they do.

you write it in on the receipt, they only take down your information at first and then they charge the tips again later, yes they can use your info anytime they want so don't use a card at a restaurant!

credit card machines have an option to change the billed amount of the ticket. they just 'add' the amount of the tip after it's initially been billed. I hope this helps
