1) It agrees with and was predicted by Einstein's theory of gravity which has been independently verified.

2) It explains the observed red-shifts in the light from distant galaxies and the fact that more distant galaxies have larger red-shifts.

3) It explains the distribution of light elements (Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium) in the universe.

4) It explains the Cosmic Background Radiation.

If supplemented by the inflationary scenario:

5) It explains the statistical variations in the CBR.

6) It explains the observed isotropy of the galaxy distribution.

7) It is consistent with known physics of subatomic particles.

And this is just the beginning. The specifics in each of these categories and the observations made are consistent with this description of the universe.

BTW: the Big Bang theory has *nothing* to do with evolution!!! Evolution is a *biological* theory, not a cosmological theory! Also, there is no center of expansion, like in an ordinary explosion. According to relativity, it is space itself that is expanding. THis is consistent with what we actually observe.

The big bang theory is ridiculous and should've been discredited YEARS ago.

Here's a question for ya....if all matter was floating around the UNIVERSE and there was an explosion that created the world...where did the UNIVERSE come from??

God created the world. That's the only answer for me.

I dont know about "..accepted and understood..." part but what other theories are ther?
and to April: you need to know something about a theory before you express opinion: the matter was not floating around till big bang. the big bang resulted in formation of the matter!

The basic evidence includes the following:
- Edwin Hubble [for whom the Space Telescope is named] discovered that the galaxies are receding from each other, with a speed that increases uniformly with distance. This implies that galaxies were once a lot closer together than they are now. If you calculate when they were all in the same place, it comes out to be 13.6 billion years ago.
- The original explosion would have created a radiation. This radiation, called the cosmic background radiation, was discovered by Penzias et al, and got the discoverers a Nobel prize. Calculations concerning this radiation and its spectral properties indicate that it originated 13.6 billion years ago.

The evidence that I would use to support this idea has already been mentioned by a coulple of the answers including the mathematician's answer, but I would like to take the time to voice my opinion on another matter.

This is a science forum so all of you religious freaks, including that disgusting looking peeper lady, should voice YOUR opinion on the religion forum instead of polluting OUR forum with your nonsense. God creating everything is an explanation with NO evidence aside from the manipulated stories that were written by people who "knew" the man who claimed that he was the son of god, not even god himself. I do not doubt that Jesus lived about 2000 years ago and is responsible for the religion that these people believe in, but it DOES NOT make him the son of god. This whole GOD idea is the one that should have, and I believe is, discredited by anyone who has a moderate understanding of reality. GIVE ME A BREAK!

It is the only theory that makes the most logical sense in terms of evolution. Want to know what really happened? God created everything.

The fact that every thing in space is moving away from a central point. This basically means that everything was in one spot at one time.

There is no logical answer to that. The most accepted answer is God.
