The wabbit is imaginary.
During the presidential election of 1988, a teenager named Donnie Darko sleepwalks out of his house one night, and sees a giant, demonic-looking rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. He returns home the next morning to find that a jet engine has crashed through his bedroom. As he tries to figure out why he survived and tries to deal with people in his town, like the school bully, his conservative health teacher, and a self-help guru, Frank continues to turn up in Donnie's mind, causing him to commit acts of vandalism and worse.

the rabbit was real, just not really there every time you see it. The movie was basically about Donnie's choice to trade his own life to preserve the life of the girl (forgot her name). If you have only watche it once, watch it again and it might be clearer to you. I thought the movie was great. There were alot of circumstances in the movie, such as Donnie's sleep-walking. If he had not been sleep walking he would have died from the plane crashing into his bed room, however by living, this started a chain of events leading to the girl's death. Hope this helps.

The rabbit was the dude that got killed.. remember the halloween costume party?.. he went back in time to warn him about the consequences of his actions. He was supposed to get killed by the peice of airplane so that his girlfriend and those other dudes live. It's all about going back in time and changing the outcome.

... i'm changing my answer, I think either none of it really happened (rabbit included) & it was all one of those types of dreams people have in a split second, or he could see the future and he chose to just stayed in bed & get hit by the engine.
