Wow, I am really confused by the question. There are several ways to interpret it in english. Really you should rephrase it.

I think its because its linked to our self esteem or rather how we think of ourselves. Its a really hard thing to be confident and think highly of ones self especially when you have ten people around you who might contradict. Disappointments, rejections, lack of motivation, fear these can all affect our confidence. Frankly our environment (the world) is a huge discouragement by itself. Sometimes people can ignore or fight against it but others are not very successful. I guess its just a matter of finding your inner spirit and letting go of fear.

Because most people can't spell confidence. Therefore when they realize they have misspelled the word their ego is bruised because everyone on Yahoo realizes somebody didn't stay awake in English class.

In my culture, seniors tend not to praise people but to criticise the children. This makes the children feel small in their own eyes.
I think this is only one reason of lack of confidence.

"Confidence", in English, signifies acting "with faith" (or assurance). All normal people have a level of confidence in their ability to deal with others, but we all usually crave greater levels of communication, and this can be achieved in one of two ways: greater confidence or greater intimacy. Intimacy is literally "not fearing", and an intimate relationship lowers the level of confidence needed to proceed easily and successfully. (Please recognise that by "intimacy" I do not necessarily refer to sexual relationship.
People often downplay the amount of confidence they have because they think of uneasy situations more than they think of successful interpersonal relationships. They equate the difficulty of negotiating with a superior (such as a "boss") with their lcack of confidence. Often popular psychology suggests you think of your boss as undressed, qas this makes you feel more confident. This tactic seems to work, but it is more likely because you "fool" yourself about the level of intimacy you share with the other person (which thus leads to lower level of confidence required). The personal eficacy of prayer is a similar example, imparting to the worshipper an elevated sense of intimacy with God.

Maybe they really do not have confidence in themselves. If you are really confident, you would not try to hide it because you are sure of your abilities and would want to flaunt them.
