I really hate it, as it dominates the whole room. If I knocked down the bit that is built on to hold the tv, is it likely to be solid with wires in it ,or just solid brick?

Since fire places similar to yours are all unique, all you can do is look at how it has been designed in order to imagine how it is constructed.

Construction:-
If the front face of the bit with the television on is fairly simple (i.e. it doesn't have loads of nooks and crannies), and the top surface is large slabs or fairly thick wood, then there is every chance that it is hollow. - In which case attempt to lift the top at you will see.
The more nooks and crannies and the smaller / lighter the surface on the horizontal surfaces the more likely that it will be solid.

Wiring
If Power sockets / Ariel Sockets have been carried forward to the from of the fireplace then there will be wiring in it. If however, if these are at (or near the back) then power it is unlikely that you will have to worry about power cables.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out the answer to this question is to do the deed and smash the offending masonry. I must concur that such disgusting constructions that were thought cool in the 1970's are better for being smashed. However, if the builder who created the eyesore in your living room had an evil streak then you may find it difficult to remove (the balloon who did work on my house before I bought it made his mortar so strong that the bricks gave up the ghost first). Have contingency plans for it to be a hard job and then if it's easy, everyone will be happy.

Urgh I know what you mean, I had one in my old house. Ugly things.
I knocked mine down and it was just one row of bricks at the front, and kinda hollow inside. If that makes sense!

Break the wall which contains the fire place. Do remove the TV before cracking

it will be brick faced and hollow, the sockets should be installed on your external wall "where they were originally" so there should not be a problem
