The symptoms of gastric ulcers include indigestion and heartburn in the middle of the upper abdomen, nausea and loss of appetite, weight loss and repeated episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding. About 30% of patients with gastric ulcers are awakened by pain at night. Many patients have periods of chronic ulcer pain alternating with symptom-free periods that last for several weeks or months. The pain may be relieved by eating or taking antacids, and may get worse a couple of hours after meals or before meals.

If the gastric ulcer is bleeding, the patient may vomit bright red blood or digested blood that looks like brown coffee grounds and have black, tarry bowel movements.

Symptoms of ulcers depend on the location of the ulceration...from burning pain to general discomfort over the stomach area. Try this! If you have pain, try 'Amphojel', 'Gelusil' or 'Maalox' and if the pain decreases within 15 minutes or so, then the ulcer is located in the stomach, but if the medication does little good, then the ulcer is in the duodenum (first part of the small intestine). A new therapy is currently in place that virtually cures most ulcers, using an antibiotic. Some people believe that stress is the cause but it isn't really the case, those individuals are simply more prone to ulcers. See your doctor and get rid of the problem...don't be an ulcer-cripple.

The most common symptom of a stomach ulcer is pain. When people talk about ulcers, though, they usually mean peptic ulcers. These form in the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. They cause sharp or burning stomach pain. A type of bacterium called helicobacter pylori (or h. pylori) is the main culprit.

The pain is caused by the ulcer and is aggravated by stomach acid coming in contact with the ulcerated area. The pain typically may:

* Be felt anywhere from your navel to your breastbone
* Last from a few minutes to many hours
* Be worse when your stomach is empty
* Flare at night
* Often be temporarily relieved by eating certain foods that buffer stomach acid or by taking an acid-reducing medication
* Come and go for a few days or weeks

Less often, ulcers may cause severe symptoms such as:

* The vomiting of blood
* Dark blood in stools or stools that are black or tarry
* Nausea or vomiting
* Unexplained weight loss
* Chest pain

Though ulcers often heal on their own, you shouldn't ignore their warning signs. If not properly treated, ulcers can lead to serious health problems, including:

* Bleeding
* Perforation (a hole through the wall of the stomach)
* Gastric outlet obstruction from swelling or scarring that blocks the passageway leading from the stomach to the small intestine.
