You're gonna love it.
Hope you can both ride motorcycles.
The people are friendly and extremely family oriented.
It is relatively cheap to get around the country.
Flights from anywhere to anywhere are around $100.
I travel there every year and live out of a backpack, including the laptop for weeks at a time. Take a good digital camera.
Saigon is frantic and exciting. See Ben Than markets as well
Hanoi is stylish and verdent, with a beautiful lake in the middle of the city. It is a must that you go to Halong Bay for at least a day trip on one of the boats $20US PP
HoiAn is where you get very well tailored suits and dresses. Post them back home from there.
NhaTrang is beachy with some reasonable dive sites.
Danang is So-so.
Every year I travel to an orphanage in Kontum (Central highlands) to work with the more than 220 children.

If you get the chance from either HoiAn or Nha Trang to go with the "Easy riders" I highly recommend it. They will charge around $20US per person per day. Well worth it. Amazing scenery and people. You will also come into the town Kontum.

In Saigon you will be approached by street kids asking you to buy either postcards or Chewing gum. I usually end up with about 5 or 6 packets a night.

Beer is about $1 US per bottle
Meals will cost anywhere from 30 cents to 3 or 4 dollars.
The food in VietNam is AWESOME. Epecially the seafood.
3 star hotels are betwen $10 to $30 US per night
