Why did they go out of fashion? I've never been to one, but they looked like fun.

It is annoying, isn't it? I like to go to the regular theatres, but the drive in is also cool. Here is a link to drive-in's in the states

I just went to the drive-in Saturday night. Went to see Garfield 2 movie and POTC II. Its not too bad for 2 movies..$7 for adults and $3 for kids. Of course I am sure it varies in diff locations.
I think we still need some of the past with us.
I can't wait to get my 54 Dodge Royal fixed up and travel the hr to the drive-in!
THe drive I went to had a cute sign that had a dinosaur on it, it read... We may be a dinosaur but we are not extinct!

"free" is on the right track. almost anytime a business exists and then disappears it is because it was not making enough money to survive. There are a few scattered about but you will find them in areas where land is cheap. In populated areas the land becomes too expensive to justify the large mass of land required to support a drive-in theatre. The land would just cost too much incomparison to what the theater makes. compare it to your local multi-screen theater that uses considerable less land and may have as much as 24 screens going at one time. Also it's harder to sneak food into the theater where in drive in's you can bring your own snacks--one more way a drive-in looses money.
again, it's about economics.

There's a great one down in Sunrise, FL (suburb of Ft. Lauderdale). It's got like 12 screens - awesome. Boy I sure do miss that one. Use to go there when I lived in Miami.

There's another good one (or use to be) somewhere on Monterey Bay, CA. Can't remember which little town it was it. But I use to go to it all the time when I was living in Monterey.

Boy I sure do miss drive-in theaters. My kids would love 'em too.

Economics. more people will stay home and watch video's DvD or other entertainment. When drive-in were big 50's &60's those other items did not exist. If people cannot make money then they will not operate. Yes there are a few scattered around but they are a novelty and are not increasing their revenue, their day is also numbered.

Another long-lost relic of bygone days for most of us, I suppose! I grew up going to them, but haven't seen one in actual use for over 25 years now. I'm surprised to read here that they still exist in some parts of the country!

Wish where I live still had one; I really miss them. Going inside of a movie theatre is far too restrictive, so I seldom go!

Probably because the theatre chains figured they could make a lot more money off the multiplex theatres. There are some here and there however, one about 20 miles from me in Oregon Ohio and I know there's one up in Dearborn as well. I'm sure there's others here and there.

Because they dont make enough money! People bring their own food and the theaters lose money. Think about it, you pay $8-10 on movie tickets and pay $8 for a small pop corn. It's all about the Benjamins...

We actually have one. Well, about 20 minutes away, we have one. It is something everyone still goes to and enjoys, all ages. We had two regular theatres close out here so only one is the 'major' cinema and it is always crowded and 'sticky'...and then you have the drive in...which is actually much better! I do not know the reason, maybe it is just who wants to provide entertainment when you can just create anther parking lot!!

Be well...
