Right, there are several key factors to take into account when making a bong:
1) It must be airtight (apart from the bits that you don't want to be)
2) Keep plastic to a minimum
3) whatever you use to seal the joints must not melt
4) Use a proper gauze, heat until red hot before using
5) How cool the smoke gets is affected by the size of the smoke chamber, the amount of water, the size of the bowl and the diameter of the down tube and bowl.

You can buy down tubes at places like King bong and other headshops.

Get a pipe big enough to fit over your mouth about 3 feet long. Seal one end. drill a hole at an angle (so it's oval in shape) pointing towards the bottom of the pipe (the sealed end) on the opposite side to where you are drilling, it should be about 5 inches from the bottom, this is the hole for your downpipe. Fit the down pipe into the hole and seal with something that will withstand high temperatures. Don't use superglue or blutack, it tastes funny. You can test how airtight the seal is by blocking the bowl an the end of your downpipe with your finger and sucking on the other end. Once you are happy with the seal drill another hole on opposite side of the bong from where the downtube enters, it should be an inch or so higher than the hole for the down tube. This is your hit hole. When you use the bong cover the hit hole until you've burnt all the contents of the bowl, then let go.

I'll tell you this much, if you find a suitable piece of plastic tubing, you can buy the stem at most head shops (if you have them there?), but what you'll want to use to seal up around the stem is this stuff called "JB Weld". You can get that at most hardware stores. It seals up super hard & tight, and is high heat resistant. I'm almost positive it's what Graphix uses.

Take an empty soup can, fill it with sand or pea gravel up to about an inch from the top, fill the rest of the can with epoxy resin, and set the tube straight up & down in the can. Let that set hard without disturbing it. You can wrap the can with some suade or whatever for decoration. Drill your holes, set your stem, and seal it all up with JB Weld.

Otherwise you can do gravity bongs...

cut a 2 liter bottle in half...drill a hole in the cap to set your stem..fill the kitchen sink & submerge the halved bottle...face the top up, set your stem, fill with weed, light it as you slowly lift the bottle up. The vacuum will draw air in through the stem, filling the bottle with smoke. Once the bottle is full, pull the stem, get your face over the top of the hole, and slowly push the bottle back into the water. The smoke will blow out, and as you inhale you will feel like you are going to pass out. You very well might, so make sure there are no sharp corners that your head will bounce off when you do...

* Get an empty 2 litre bottle of pop and cut it in half horizontally
* Discard the bottom of the bottle
* Cover the cut edge in cellatape to make sure it isnt rough
* Get a plastic bag its got to be airtight and not too thick (or thin) size doesnt matter as it can be cut to the size you desire
* Using the 'mouth piece' on the top of the bottle suck the bag so it fits neatly into the cavity of the bottle
* Secure roughly with cellatape
* Trim the excess bag (on the outside of the bong)
*Using cellatape again tightly fasten the edges of the bag so they are air tight
* A simple technique to test if it is airtight is to put the hole on your cheek and try and pull the bag down, if this is hard to do it means you bong is airtight
* All you need to get going is a gauze either made out of a milk bottle top foil lid or a 13mm socket with a gauze screen in it

If you cant be a*sed just make 1 massive spilff that is gonna tek you ages to smoke

We use soda cans in my country when we're tired of rollin our stuff, we just puncture holes on the side like between where your finger joints would be, then we indent it and put the stuff on top, light it and breathe in through the drinking hole.
Or u can take the hardcore druggie route and just break a bottle, keep the neck, put in some kind of filter and jam pack the rest of the neck with the stuff. Over here we only really do that with weed and mandrax though.

Got something much better mate,
get a 2 or 3 litre plastic bottle,make a small hole at the bottom, fill it with water holding your finger over the hole, then burn your gear in the top for a minute or so,
let the water go from the bottom as it draws the smoke into the bottle.

Jam jar with a plastic lid, two bits of garden hose, a cone and some sealing tape. 'Course, bear in mind that smoking a bong is going to direct large amounts of polluted, superheated steam into your lungs and expose you to a pretty damn high risk of pluracy.

A large plastic coke bottle, a couple of joints depending on how strong you like it. put small holes in the bottle to just about fit the joints. put in the joints. close the lid on the bottle until the smoke gathers up. once its filled, take all the smoke in one breath and if ur not stoned after that then theres no hope for u !
