Does anyone know whether, apart from the Halifax Card Account, there is any bank at which you could open a current account without having a credit check done? Within the past few years, both myself and my hubby have been out of work and our finances went accordingly haywire, so our credit score is terrible. We have recently had a bit of a windfall and want to open a new current account to put it in!

Go into the branch and make the application in person, being honest with them.... they will more than likely set up a facility for you but offer you no credit facilities (overdraft, guarantee cards)... as long as their has been no bankruptcy, then you should be fine.... try Nationwide Anglia and other building societies who are traditionally a little more forgiving.

Current account with no Credit check is not possible.

In the interests of preventing money laundering, all banks must run a credit check before offering you any form of credit. So any of the following need a check:
Overdraft
Credit card
Cheque book & Guarantee card

This list can go on for pages, but in general, it is anytime you will be borrowing money that is not your, the is so.

Most banks offer some sort of basic account that has no overdraft, no cheque card, or maybe no debit card. It varies from bank to bank.

So in general, just go along 2 of either of a passport, driving licene, utility bill (Not a mobile bill) or an armed forces card. Tell them you have recently come out of a period of unemployment, and you want to put your finances in order, and they will look after you.

All UK banks run a credit check.

What type of account you get depends on your score.

If you have good credit, you can normally get an account with a Cheque Book, Guarantee/Debit Card and sometimes a credit card.

If your credit score is bad, you may just get a debit card such as Solo or Electron. These are basic accounts which you will not be able to get an overdraft on.

First Direct - the phone banking company - try them i just opened an account with them over the phone, with no problems as far as i know. (0845 6100100).
I switched from Barclays after a lot of research and am better of with First Direct.
Good luck, bad credit is bad news.

I think they all do. HSBC do a basic bank account which might be what you're looking for.
