"chick lit is a genre comprised of books that are mainly written by women for women. The books range from having main characters in their early 20's to their late 60's. There is usually a personal, light, and humorous tone to the books. Sometimes they are written in first-person narrative; other time they are written from multiple viewpoints. The plots usually consist of women experiencing usual life issues, such as love, marriage, dating, relationships, friendships, roommates, corporate environments, weight issues, addiction, and much more.
So how does that differ from regular women's fiction, you might be wondering? Well, it's all in the tone. Chick lit is told in a more confiding, personal tone. It's like having a best friend tell you about her life. Or watching various characters go through things that you have gone through yourself, or witnessed others going through. Humor is a strong point in chick lit, too. Nearly every chick lit book I have read has had some type of humor in it. THAT is what really separates chick lit from regular women's fiction."

The Chic Lit genre focuses on single career gals (usually in their 20s or 30s, but sometimes in their 40s) who have bad strings of luck with their love lives, their jobs and often even their eccentric family members. Their covers most often feature cartoon drawings and an abundance of the color pink.
The genre really got started with "Bridget Jones' Diary" back in 1997. That book was such a huge hit that suddenly everyone was copying the format.
A case has been made for Jane Austen being the first chick-lit writer, though. "Bridget Jones' Diary" pays obvious homage to "Pride and Prejudice." One of Bridget's love interests is even named Mark Darcy, after "Mr. Darcy" of "P&P" fame.
Although romantic plots are usually the main focus of chick lit novels, they are distinct from the romance genre. Romances always have a happy ending. The hero and heroine are guaranteed to ride off into the sunset together in a romance novel.
In chick-lit, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. And sometimes the one who's been looking the like the hero all along winds up being an absolute jerk and getting dumped.

It's for women, and I'd argue that it has come to mean "disposable women's literature." Quality suffers. I'd disagree with the person who said *Wuthering Heights* is chic lit. That's a classic written by a woman. Those Shopaholic books I keep hearing about - those are chic lit.

It's 'Chick Lit'.
It means books for 'chicks'. Although how they're meant to turn over the pages, God only knows. Actually, I suppose they could use their little beaks.
