I am a perfectionist, and so I often work myself too hard. Teaching is the only profession I can think of that makes that worthwhile. Should I bust my butt trying to make some other people money in some large corporation or trying to connect with and teach children? No brainer there.

I have had several wonderful teachers and serveral terrible teachers. The bad ones are the ones that drove me to teach. No child should have a negative experience at school. Too many of them have bad situations at home. I had a chemistry teacher, I mean babysitter, that just watched us while we did homework for our next class. At the most, she would have us read some magazine and write a short summary of an article. It was a waste of our tax dollars and I did not learn anything. I love to learn and I want to make the students do so as well. I still have a few semesters before I teach, but I think of it like a game, trying to see what ideas/methods work and which ones need some tweeking. I want to be an inspiratioin to my kids. I believe that I can make new/creative ideas that will make the learning experience fun.

I was a high school teacher for 3 years, since then I have ventured off into other things, but intend to go back to teaching when I am older... and wiser.
What I found rewarding about teaching, other than seeing your students accomplish things they never thought they could achieve, was the fact that as a teacher I was learning just as much if not more from them.
The challenge of creating lesson plans that every personality can relate to, making boring things interesting, trying to reach new levels of understanding in what you are teaching and how you can be more effective.
There's got to be a love for it to get you through the rough spots, like in everything else.
Good Luck!

the shame is that you will get many answers that will degrade teachers. and the sad thing is we all sit around wondering why the USA is losing ground to the rest of the world... main reason is lack of RESPECT for education. if we respected education then teachers would be HIGHLY paid. Highly paid professions being in the best in their field... and then our kids and our nation will benefit from this.
I want to be a teacher after years of working as an engineer. I have earned my money and prestige and think it is time to I gave back to my community... I will be one of the best qualified teachers in the school and will get paid less than students I had working for me as interns. I am able to go back and not worry about the money or prestige factor but our education system CAN NOT RELY on this! we must start by respecting a GREAT education and understanding it will take sacrifice of $$$ to accomplish this... a few more years and India and China will swallow us whole in engineering and maths and sciences...

I want to be a teacher (and already am) because it's a wonderful feeling when you see your students become more and more autonomic about their knowledge and knowing the world.
I try to show them different ways of acquiring information, second to every speck of individuality and creativity which, I hope, pays off for them later in life.
Besides, there is so many things you can learn from the kids - the way they perceive the world can sometimes be surprising and/or shocking but that's what co-exisiting with other people is all about, isn't it?

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. I had some awesome teachers and thought it was so cool how one person can bring so much knowledge to young minds. I absolutely love children. I love the challenge of trying to get them to understand something that is new to them and I love to see their faces light up when they finally understand the concept. Knowledge is such a powerful thing, and I am so happy to be one that helps spread this in such a corrupted world!

I have dyslexia. For a very long time teachers made me feel stupid because it took me longer to read, I had difficulty spelling, couldn't remember math facts, etc. As I got older, I wasn't encouraged to go on to higher education, I was told I would make a great hair dresser! To prove everybody wrong I'v already finished my masters in education and am looking forward to starting my PHd, I just want to make sure that all kids with disabilities know that they have just as good a chance to succedd in their futures as "the smart kids". Everybody deserves a fair chance at education- no matter what path they have to take to get their.

I became a teacher because I love to see that look of awe in a student's face when they figure out that acquiring knowledge is not a waste of their time.
