How can we really expect to answer this question? What one personal calls brave someone else will call fanatic and someone else will call dumb.
The book "Enemy at the Gate" includes a post-war conversation with President Eisenhower and Prime Minister DeGaulle. They get to talking about the war and the battle of Stalingrad (commonly referred to as the turning point in Europe). Ike said that the soldiers at Stalingrad were some of the finest and bravest. DeGaulle says something to the effect that we can thank the Soviets for turning the tide. No, no counters Ike, I meant the Germans!

I think each country had the "bravest" soldiers. How can any of them be considered less than brave for fighting for their country? I know a lot of them didn't even believe in the reason they were fighting, but were doing it because they were told to do so, no matter which country they were in.

Talk about an argument starter! I'd say any soldier who put his life on the line for his country was tied for the bravest.

As a Canuck I'd have to say the Canadians for many reasons including the fact that they went to defend Europe waaaay before the Americans woke up and that it was understood that Canada would not gain any territory, rather it was the right thing to do.

Kamikazi's from Japan
442nd Combat Regiment - USA
Waffen SS "Classic Divisions" - Germany
Russian infantry
RAF pilots - 1940-41
My pic is the soviet infantry, especially their tactics of sending in troops with no weapons, with the knowledge that their dead comrades would be the suppliers of their weapons. Of course, that's discounting the Commisars who set up machine gun nests to take out any slackers....maybe that's where their bravery came from?
