I'm planning to go on holiday to Loutro on Crete in October. Have you been there? What's the best way to get there - package or individual? Any recommendations?

I have lived in Crete and know Loutro quite well. You can only get there by boat from Hora Sfakion - about fifteen minutes. Hora Sfakion is across the White mountains from Chania and takes about an hour and a half by coach or bus.Great views. Loutro is a seriously classy spot and should be easy to do independently in October. There are charter flights every Tuesday from the UK to Chania airport. - or Easy jet to Athens and the night ferry (arriving in Souda about 7.00 am) from Piraeus.
Loutro has a website - use Google.

I llived in Crete for a summer season as a holiday rep and highly recommend the island however I'm not familiar with Loutro. Malia is defintely the party town and nearby Hersonissos is also worth a visit for a good night out. Not as full on as Malia but noce bars and restuarants. Elounda over the east side of the island is a nice fishing village and a good day out and if you're over that side of the island make sure you do the day trip to Spinnalonga...nicknamed the island of tears but a very good trip. In general Crete offers everything from lazy days to lots of places to visit. Its a pefect island for a perfect holiday! Have fun!

I Haven't been in Loutro and frankly I don't even know where it is located (And I'm Greek). BUT, the prefecture of Chania is the place for everyone, from party to tranquility, Chania is the best place in whole Crete. Lots of beautiful beaches, perfect food, many shops and places to see (Falasarna beach, Elafonisi, Chania old town, Agia Marina village for tourists and a lot more) Look it up and you will remember me when you get there
