It depends heavily on the celebrity. Many music groups for example have a specific image, one which is either imposed or created, and when they deviate from this it can either create hostility or create sympathy if they have been living a lie for a long time.
The film industry seems much more tolerant of gay actors, and they are much more free to act as they want and are also free to do the fims and work that they are happy with.
As for your question, it's more down t the individual fan's opinion. Their own mind is much more powerful than anything else.

The gay aspect of celebs did no harm to the careers of Sir Elton John, George Michael, Keannu Reeves, tennis stars Billy Jean King, Martina Navaratislova...

I'm quite surprised that some bright person hasn't yet wheeled out the "Don't mind what they do together so long as they don't try it on me" tack which of course usually means that they're latently gay themselves. They're the only ones who are affected by the celebs doing the 'coming out' act so they'll swear black's white that they don't like said celeb when in reality they're aching for it! Meanwhile, nobody else gives a toss!

Personally I could care less if celeb's are gay or not..their talents are more important to me than their personal life..I'd say it has negative and positive effects on their careers..The media has alot to do with how it is perceived by the public and the public determines a stars longevity..as well as their performances..Most that have admitted they are gay are obvious to me anyway prior to the admission..and I am sure they are to most people with a keen sense of people..=)

Well when 'celebrities' like that admit they are gay, I don't think it matters. It won't them more or less popular. If someone a bit more of a 'celebrity' admitted being gay then I think it might change peoples opinions either way.

Assuming they were popular to begin with?
I suppose the gay community is happier when a celeb comes out.

No, it usually enhances their popularity but I would hardly class him as a celebrity. More of a has been who is probably trying to get his own career so 'came out'.

I think it depends on their fanbase, for example stars of the music world are quite readily accepted if they "come out" but footballers have a really hard time
