Not all "Christian" followers adhere to this. It is generally adhered to by Catholics. If you read about different religions or beliefs you would find that in quite a few Christian Demoninations the Priest/Father/Pastor etc do get married and have families.

Also there are other religious sects where not just the "Head" do not get married, but neither do the male followers who live in the Santuaries.

If you read a little history you will be able to educate yourself on when this practice of not marrying would have started.

Celibacy in the Catholic priesthood is only a several centuries old and was prompted by greed. Up until the middle ages in Europe it was common for priests to marry and nuns to hear the confessions of their sisters. They often had children and when they died willed all of there earthly possessions to there surviving family, the church felt it had a right to the wealth of its priests after they died so there you go.

He was referring to a Catholic priest I guess.....
It is written (must be in the Quaran too) that a man cannot serve God and his wife at the same time. He will not be true to either of them. A priest gets a calling from God and along with that comes the strenght to control his desires.
Its stupid to think about it the way you did to compare God to man (I think its a sin in Islam too) God came to earth in the form of a man to save us from our sins and Jesus was born out of the holy spirit and is divine and has told his disciples " Leave all your belongings and family and follow me"

The priests don't intend to be like God. They do follow Him but they don't pretend to be Him. They offer themselves wholly to Him because that's their way of expressing their faith. They think having a family would hinder them from fullfiling their mission.

correction...
it's a catholic question. Because Christians priests still get married..
maybe this doesn't help much...,, but I THINK..,, priests and nuns have thought to serve their God 100%. and if they have families, spent time with families, so they can't serve him 100%! to understand this..,, you have to know how strict are their live...

you find it okay to have a million wives(which i find out of place). Its not surprising that the question of having one wife would come to you as "out of this world"!!!!!!what about having none? so i surpose we should keep to the things we understand very well- that's our own cultures.
