Underwear has a different meaning in North America than the UK. To us (NA) it is what you would be wearing under your shirt(if your female) or trousers/pants.

Something you wear to cover your important parts before the jumpers and the trousers etc. The bras, the g-strings etc.

socks, I don't know. I think they are not underwear, because sometimes they are outerwear.
